A Chinese diplomat met with President of the National Transition Council, the body set up by insurgents in Benghazi Libya, said Beijing Friday. This is the first official contact between China and rebellion. In a statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not disclose the contents of the talks between the Chinese ambassador to Qatar, Zhang Zhiliang, and the president of the NLC, Moustapha Abdeljalil.
The two men, who met in Doha, the capital of Qatar, "exchanged views on the events in Libya," the statement said without specifying the date of the meeting. "The position of China on the issue Jamahiriya is clear. We hope for a political solution to the crisis and believe that the future of Libya must be determined by its people," the department.
China abstained from voting on resolution 1973 the Security Council authorizing the use of force to protect the Libyan population. However, she condemned the extension of military operations and regularly calls for a cease-fire.
