The Sultan of Oman gives the legislative powers

MASKS - The Sultan of Oman, Qaboos Bin Said al-Said - in power for over forty years - has decided today to give legislative powers to an advisory council, after that in Oman there were several demonstrations to demand political reforms with a growing social discontent in the background. By a decree issued by the official Ona, the Sultan ordered to give "the legislative powers and those of control" of government to the "Council of Oman, formed by a Consultative Council (Shura), elected to 83 members and a Council of State, a kind of senate of 57 members appointed by the sultan.

The two bedrooms have a purely advisory role with the Government, which deals instead of putting into practice the general policy adopted by the sultan. In the same decree, Qaboos has asked a committee to submit within 30 days an amendment to the Constitution that allows to confer legislative powers to the Consultative Assembly.

The Sultan also ordered large increases in pensions, between 50 and 100%, according to Ona and doubled his salary to civil servants. In recent days, Qaboos has undertaken a broad cabinet reshuffle, after removing two ministers, considered "corrupt". To meet the demands of the protesters, Sultan - we learn more - have appointed new heads of police and customs forces on trial for the brutal response to the demonstrations that took place in the city of Sohar.

The pro-democracy demonstrations against corruption and continued today.
