Serbia, Tadic: "Ratko Mladic is arrested" Wanted: 15 years for genocide

After Radovan Karadzic, the Serbian police have arrested one of the last executioners in the Bosnian war: Ratko Mladic, 69, the military leader of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia, creator of the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre. "I'm glad I lived long enough to have seen the arrest of Mladic, who deserves nothing but to end his days in jail," said Munira Subasic of the Association 'Mothers of Srebrenica'.

Fugitive since 1996, dangled over his head an international arrest warrant for charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. The official announcement came from Serbian President Boris Tadic, after the caution of the previous hours. In the morning, local TV reported the arrest of a man, a certain Milorad Komadic, assuming that in reality can be of Mladic.

Confirmation of the media and a family friend of the former chief of staff chasing the silence of the authorities, who have been subjected to analysis on the arrested DNA. Tadic has not added any details on the dynamics of the arrest, but the Bosnian television reported a quick blitz in the village of Lazarus, 80 kilometers northeast of Belgrade.

Mladic, who was at the home of a relative, would not have resisted. The people interviewed claimed that he had never seen in the village and that the house had been searched several times in the past. Some have added that, even if they had seen, would never complained. For his capture, the U.S.

government had offered a reward of $ 5 million and another million had been offered by the Serbian authorities. Will now be extradited, but the operation could take up to one week. "I think for Serbia EU ports are now open," said the chairman. The arrest of war criminals has always been, in fact, a necessary condition placed by the institution to accept the nomination of the European country.

The former chief of staff is considered "compelling evidence of the efforts of Serbia and its cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the President of the EU Parliament, Jerzy Buzek. "A great test of democratic maturity" of the country, according to the Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

In recent years, the controversy were not missed. In 2005, after the statements of an officer of the army deserter, claiming voices never felt that the Bosnian authorities were dealing with the same Mladic its delivery to the international tribunal in The Hague. The following year, it was confrontation between the EU and Bosnia: the European institution had set a deadline for the arrest of 10 May 2006, but the former military leader was still at large.

"I promise the arrest of Hadzic," Tadic added today, referring to the last war criminal still at: Goran Hadzic, President of the Republic of Serbian Krajina during the war. They must then be established, he concluded, what were the people, even in government, who helped wanted to hide all these years.

Among the congratulations and the general satisfaction, the only lone voice is that of the government of Moscow. "You can talk about the justice of the court in The Hague - said the Russian representative at the Atlantic Alliance, Dmitry Rogozin - only when they will be punished for the massacres of Serbs and opponents of NATO leaders that they bomb Serbia in 1999 ".

"Sorry for the loss of freedom of General Mladic," he later said Karadzic, through his lawyer. The former president "looks forward - added the lawyer - to work with him to reveal the truth about what happened in Bosnia." In the life of the "Executioner of Srebrenica, Mladic as was known, the violence seems to have been a constant.

Two years after his father was killed by the Croatian Ustasha, the Nazi allies. Explodes when the war with Croatia in 1991, then-colonel takes command of the Yugoslav Federal Army in Knin, which will soon to the capital of the secessionist Serbs in Croatia. And 'as long as Mladic ordered heavy bombing of Zadar, while it becomes of the self-commander of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia.

Led by Mladic, the soldiers implement a brutal ethnic cleansing - two and a half million people were driven from their lands - in the name of Greater Serbia. Among the weapons used to destroy the population, torture, rapes and the use of concentration camps. During the war, lost his life the only daughter of former senior leader: Ana committed suicide at age 23 in 1994 in Belgrade.

Never explained the reason for the gesture, according to some a result of what her father was doing in Bosnia, according to others for the death of her boyfriend who has a master, to keep it away from her, had sent to the front. Against Mladic and former President Radovan Karadzic in 1995 formalized the ICC charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

The following year, for the two you will hear an international arrest warrant. In 2006, former military chief is dismissed: it is no longer a Bosnian Serb army chief, but continues to live in Bosnia and Serbia. A comfortable life and not too withdrawn, covered by a network of clandestine aid and under the protection of Slobodan Milosevic.

Until his arrest in 2001, when the fun begins for Mladic hiding, lasted 16 years.
