Eight injured in a bombing in Lebanon against Italian convoy of UNIFIL

.- At least eight people, six Italians and two Lebanese have been wounded in an attack today against an Italian convoy Interim Force in Lebanon United Nations (UNIFIL), told Efe and Lebanese military sources said force. "Among the wounded Italians are two very serious," Efe said a Lebanese military source, who said he had already begun investigations.

Although initially there was talk of the possibility that there were casualties, sources of UNIFIL in Lebanon confirmed to EFE that there were only eight wounded, and explained that the explosion was very strong. The two Lebanese who were injured were in place at the time of the explosion.

The attack occurred about 10 miles north of the southern city of Sidon and near the Awali River and hit the last of the four vehicles of a UNIFIL convoy bound for Beirut. The Lebanese television showed pictures of destroyed terrain and the crater left by the explosion. UNIFIL sources consulted by Efe said the explosive device was activated by remote control, adding that the damaged vehicle, which was not armored nor did inhibitors, was transportation.

In Rome, the Italian Defense Ministry confirmed that two people seriously injured. One of them runs the risk of losing an eye and the other suffered a laceration in the carotid artery and has been operated. Today's attack occurred near the spot where the January 10, 2008, three Irish peacekeepers were wounded by an explosive charge placed in a package at the entrance to the southern city of Sidon.

The UNIFIL troops have been subjected to several attacks, including the deadliest was committed against Spanish soldiers on June 24, 2007, which killed six soldiers. Nothing but the attack appeared to know the reactions of condemnation of the Lebanese authorities. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, described as "criminal attack" this and said it was aimed at destabilizing security and stability inside the country, local agency reported ANN.

Suleiman was told what happened by the army chief, General Jean Kajwayi, whom he urged to make thorough investigations to discover the culprits and bring them to justice. For its part, the head of Parliament, the Shiite politician Nabih Berri, called "terrorist crime" attack, he wished the speedy recovery of the injured and called for its discovery as soon as possible to those responsible.

The prime minister-designate, Najib Mikati, called the UN special coordinator in Lebanon, Michael Williams, to condemn this act and to thank the efforts of the UN to support stability and security in southern Lebanon. Italy participates in the UNIFIL mission with a military contingent, including the naval component, add 1,780 soldiers from a total of 11,800 soldiers from 33 countries, under the command of Spanish General Alberto Asarta Cuevas.
