Côte d'Ivoire: UN concerned at the deteriorating humanitarian situation

While the situation in Côte d'Ivoire deteriorates, the Office of the United Nations for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Friday, March 4, have suspended some of its operations in western countries because of deterioration security situation. Insecurity has grown "more than 200 000 people" out of a district of Abidjan, according to the UN mission in the country, UNOCI.

It has also forced more than 70,000 people to flee the country, mainly to neighboring Liberia. Since March, the north of Côte d'Ivoire, under the supervision of former rebels allied with Alassane Ouattara, is without power, a situation that the Ivorian Electricity Company has blamed the outgoing government of President Laurent Gbagbo .

Power outages were reported by residents of several towns in the area held by the former rebel New Forces (FN) since 2002. The five African heads of state panel members of the African Union (AU) on the crisis in Côte d'Ivoire have to go on Friday afternoon in Abidjan after a short meeting in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Established by the AU in late January, the panel is still trying to develop solutions "binding" for both sides, which should be known in late March.
