UN urges Palestinian factions to compromise on two-state solution

.- The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the efforts of Hamas and Fatah to reach an agreement of reconciliation, but urged both Palestinian factions to commit to a choice of two States to resolve the conflict with Israel. Ban called on Hamas and Fatah not to abandon the principles of the so-called Roadmap to Middle East, including the establishment of a Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel, according to today said the UN spokesman, Martin Nesirky.

The UN chief made that request the same day that the Islamist Hamas, which runs the Gaza Strip and does not recognize Israel's right to exist, and Al Fatah, the faction that gives support to the Palestinian National Authority ( ANP), which controls the West Bank, ended four years of division with the signing of a reconciliation agreement in Egypt.

"The secretary general wants to see unity in the framework of the positions of the Middle East Quartet and the commitments of the Organization for Liberation of Palestine and the Arab Initiative for Peace ", the spokesman said in a statement. Under the Road Map by the Quartet, comprising the UN, the European Union, Russia and the United States, Israel and a Palestinian state established in the territory occupied by Israeli forces in 1967 should live side by side in peace and respecting their mutual security.

Ban was also supported the work of Hamas and Fatah, which has allowed today Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the head of the Hamas political bureau, Khaled Meshal, to sign a reconciliation, and thanked also the effort of Egypt rapprochement.
