Hamas-Fatah agreement: Ismail Haniyeh ready to resign

In a statement issued Saturday in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of the Hamas government in Gaza, declares to be "ready to put [his] resignation, as part of the reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah ". "This agreement is very important, and should increase efforts to end the divisions and encourage unity among Palestinians," he adds.

According to a memorandum of agreement initialed in Cairo on April 27 by Azzam Al-Ahmad, the Fatah, and Moussa Abu Marzouk, the number two political bureau of Hamas, the two parties have agreed to form a transitional government composed of independent persons, for simultaneous presidential and legislative elections within a year.

The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Salam Fayyad, for his part expressed hope Wednesday that the agreement could lead to "the reunification of the nation, needed to enable our people to decide their destiny and to establish a independent state on all territories occupied since 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

" The signing of the reconciliation agreement by the leaders of the main Palestinian factions is scheduled for Tuesday in Cairo. The next day, Mr. Abbas and Hamas leader in exile in Damascus, Khaled Meshaal, must attend a ceremony and will meet in face to face for the first time since the Islamist movement took power in Gaza after a stroke force in June 2007.
