Three children die in a new case of contaminated milk in China

Three children died and 35 people were poisoned in north-western China after drinking milk contaminated with nitrite, a substance used for curing meats. Most people are poisoned children younger than 14 years. They were hospitalized in two schools in the city of Pingliang. The two farms suspected of causing the contamination were shut down and their managers are under investigation.

Several food poisoning scandals have recently erupted in China. In 2008, at least six children have died and nearly 300 000 have fallen ill because of milk powder containing melamine, a chemical industrial diluted milk to artificially enhance the protein content.
