Stay human, Vik

Human remains and Vittorio Arrigoni the phrase with which he signed his articles for the Manifesto and the web. And "human remains" is the only thing I can say today, in front of his barbaric murder. A death that leaves me, among many, one regret: not having met him in person, I learned about reading, in time, his writings and seeing his videos.

Vittorio was a non-violent, a full-time volunteer, one of those who did not think about his future because too busy to devote this "other". He devoted himself to the Palestinian cause. But can you imagine an Italian like that? In the Italy of those days would have been profane: "We shoot on migrants," "Mitragliamoli", and he there, side by side with the "barbarians", ready to act as his shield.

I can see him now in this video, while the shoot at a camp in the Gaza Strip. While, along with fishermen on a vessel is strafed with lead and water from an Israeli naval vessel with no apparent reason. I am convinced of one thing, or maybe I just hope with all myself, Victor's sacrifice will serve to open the eyes of Italians on the Palestinian issue.

With this video, and still others that Vittorio Arrigoni published on the internet, many for the first time they see what happens in the land poisoned by human malice and ignorance. The European Parliament we had occupied Gaza and Palestine with the resolution condemning the attack by the Israeli army to the Freedom Flotilla, 31 May 2010, which had caused the deaths of nine activists, pro-Gaza.

I had both participated in the drafting of the final resolution, both closely followed the debate, speaking in the preparatory meeting of the ALDE Group. I asked my colleagues not to do "support", not to take sides, but to reason and understand. And we brought home the resolution. The murder of Victor will serve to bring to light, among the "ordinary civilians," the serious responsibility of the State of Israel against not only the Palestinian people, but of all the volunteers of NGOs who daily risk their lives on the Strip because they do not want to accept that every people has the right to his state.

Israel has never accepted the many invitations from the international community to put an end to the blockade of Gaza, has refused to respect international treaties, as well as denied membership of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. It certainly can not accuse me of anti-Semitism when I say that civil rights in the Gaza Strip are strongly and consistently violated by a block that causes a permanent humanitarian emergency.

What Israel has to do with the death of Victor? Yes, it is pointless. Many speak of the Salafi movement, which denies any involvement in the meantime, some see a hand of Israeli intelligence, some of Al Qaeda. Israel has its own responsibilities, because Victor was there to combat the abuses on the Palestinian population and to help a people to stand up.

I am sure, to affirm the right of every people to have their own state is not anti-Semitic, nor Zionist. If instead of cheering for one or the other "team", or even worse one or the other financiers, foreign states have addressed the issue as a humanitarian case, maybe now would be a cooperating Victor, a volunteer, correspondent, a young man alive.
