Bouteflika announces reforms to electoral law

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced a revision of the Constitution, Electoral Law and Law on Political Parties "for best practice of democracy in Algeria." In a nationally televised speech broadcast on public television, Bouteflika did not specify the date of these revisions, but promised to take into account all the political parties, including those not represented in Parliament.

"Drawing on the Constitution, I will use my right to ask Parliament gives a review of the legislative upon which rest the rules of the democratic and free choice of citizens," said the Algerian head of state before adding the democracy, freedom, justice and the rule of law are "legitimate aspirations." Bouteflika considered necessary to advance "the deepening of the democratic process, strengthening the foundations of the rule of law, reducing disparities and the acceleration of economic development." Upon review of the country's basic law, the Algerian leader announced the forthcoming establishment of a commission composed of experts in constitutional law.

This committee shall make proposals, he said, "in accordance with the fundamental values of our society", before being submitted to the approval of Parliament or a referendum. About the Political Parties Law, Bouteflika said his review should allow the political parties a more effective contribution "to the country's renovation process."
