Rio de Janeiro is the first time a female police chief

RIO DE JANEIRO, 16 Feb. Commissioner Marta Rocha will be from Wednesday the first woman to head the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, a position he assumed in the midst of a corruption scandal that led to the resignation of former head of the Guard. Rocha, 51, was appointed after a meeting of more than five hours in the Public Security Secretariat of Rio, which has been valued his experience as head of the Police Specialized Care for Women.

The new Chief of Police of Rio will take office at a time when the institution seeks to overcome one of the worst scandals in its history. His predecessor, Allan Turnowski, had to resign on Tuesday after the arrest of 38 civilians and military officers charged with alleged links to drug trafficking.

Among those arrested include one of his closest collaborators. "Operation Guillotine", held last Friday, in addition to the discovery that the group of detainees received $ 70,000 (51,900 euros) a month to protect drug traffickers and organized crime members. Rocha will be in control more than 12,000 security officers of the second largest city in Brazil and one of the most violent of the rising power, which late last year was the scene of heavy fighting between soldiers and drug traffickers in refugee favelas.

Purging processes within police institutions are part of strategy that attempts to implement the Government of Dilma Rousseff to ensure security during the World Cup and 2014 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Speaking to the press, Rocha has said he will challenge you to take the reins of the Police of Rio, but trust that can overcome the bad times "for the good cops and good cops are his boss demanding dedication, courage, competence and devotion, "Agencia Brasil reported.
