French President Nicolas Sarkozy will travel Saturday, May 18 in Côte d'Ivoire to attend the inauguration of Alassane Ouattara's Ivorian presidency, said Tuesday a statement from the Elysee. Nicolas Sarkozy will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Alain Juppe and by the Minister for Cooperation, Henry Raincourt.
He will meet the French community in Ivory Coast in Abidjan on the military base of Port-Bouet and deliver a speech. Elected November 28, Alassane Ouattara has gained power after nearly five months of post-election crisis, due to the refusal of the incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo to give him instead.
The latter was arrested April 11 by the forces ouattara with the decisive support of UN troops and France. The crisis and fighting in this former French colony were almost three thousand dead, authorities said. Around 1700 French soldiers are still stationed in Cote d'Ivoire alongside forces peacekeeping UN.
