Libya, Frattini: "End of mission within a month"

The end of military operations in Libya, "there are assumptions which speak of 3-4 weeks." He said the foreign minister, Franco Frattini, in Palermo today stressing that "optimistic assumptions instead say a few days." "We all want the mission to Libya to finish as soon as possible" is the cold response of the deputy spokesman of NATO, Carmen Romero.

Recalling the words of the last few days of the Secretary General of the Alliance, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, that the mission will continue until they are achieved three objectives: the suspension of all attacks against rebels and civilians, the return to their bases all military and paramilitary forces loyal to the regime, ensuring that humanitarian aid can be distributed freely and safely.

The problem of war in Libya, however, is not the end - the minister said - but it's like to work for an end to the actions of military protection as soon as possible. In any case, "we must step up the pressure" on Gaddafi's regime "to start the political initiative." "This - noted - was the outcome of the meeting of the Contact Group that was held yesterday in Rome." Meeting at which the decision was made to use the frozen assets to the Libyan authorities to assist the insurgents (see yesterday's news).

Frattini's words come after the approval of the League's motion on the intervention in Libya. After pressure from the Northern League to set a date certain for the end of the raid, the Parliament adopted a document calling for the government to engage, "according to international organizations and our allies," to set "a deadline of course, be communicated to Parliament, within which to conclude the actions.
