MADRID, May 6. The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) expressed its dismay at the deaths of two journalists in Peru and Brazil on Wednesday and urged the authorities of both countries to investigate the facts. On Wednesday, coinciding with the celebration of World Day of Press Freedom, was killed in Peru journalist and host of Radio Ollantay, Julio Castillo, and in Brazil the owner and editor of 'Panorama Geral' Nascimento Valério .
"We are appalled at these new crimes that shake us, shock and stress, on the day we celebrate with joy the freedom of the press, that this is a profession of risk and we still have much to keep it safe," lamented the president of the SIP, Gonzalo Marroquín, according to the organization in a statement.
For his part, President of the Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, Robert Rivard, showed their solidarity with the families and colleagues of murdered journalists and called on the authorities of Peru and Brazil to investigate the facts deeply "for the mobile and implement justice for the perpetrators and masterminds.
" Julio Cesar Castillo died while having lunch at a restaurant in Viru, a town in northwestern Peru, when four men entered the room and shot him six times. Castillo had been threatened by an audio broadcast that revealed the alleged corruption of a local government authority, says the National Press Association of Peru.
For its part, Valerio Nascimento received several bullet wounds to his residence in the city of Rio Claro, state of Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. In this sense, his newspaper reported the alleged irregularities would be involved the mayor of Bananal, according to Brazilian newspaper 'O Globle' which reported that the police is not ruling out political motives for the shooting because that Nascimento was also linked in these activities.
