Cycling, an alternative to the high price of gasoline in the U.S.

The price of gasoline also has a psychological barrier. For the average consumer in the United States that line is four dollars a gallon, or about $ 1.05 a gallon. It is more expensive than what you pay in a supermarket in the suburbs for their milk. And when the price on foot hose is close to that ceiling, it looks more the portfolio and look for ways to save.

With energy so expensive, it is not surprising that many will seek other alternatives to travel such as bicycles and motorcycles. Drowned when the hose went portfolios in the summer of 2008. But this time, moreover, the trend is driven because there are more bike-friendly communities and invested millions of dollars in building green lanes.

Bicycle sales rose 9% in the first quarter, compared to the same period of 2010. And that despite the months of January and February were very hard by snow. These are data from Leisure Trends Group, a firm specializing in analyzing business trends. In the summer of 2008, commuting by bike and rose 15%, according to the census.

Less than a decade in the U.S. had a total of 25 cities with marked lanes for bicycle use. Now, the bike lane is in 179 communities, with cities like San Francisco, Boston and New York as champions of this movement, according to the American League of Biciclyst. In Denver, Washington and Minneapolis bike programs are shared.

For road bikes for the most used to get from home to work, the increase at the start of this year was already 29%. But in the U.S. there are about 61 million people who are considered "sedentary" as Sportings Goods Manufacturers Association. For them the best choice of transportation is still the scooter, whose sales rose 50% in one year.

The average price of a motorcycle in the U.S. is around $ 10,000 (6.990 euros), and have a range of up to 55 miles per gallon of gasoline, very similar to that of a Prius, the most popular hybrid Toyota company. In the case of a scooter is almost double the mileage and costs $ 4,000 (2796 euros), almost six times less than a car battery that combines combustion engine.

The average American spends about 46 minutes to go to work, according to the latest survey made by Gallup. Since the association Peopleforbikes say they are beginning to see the same rise in the use of the bike that started the past three springs, but prefer to wait and see what happens in the coming months before attributing the rise of gasoline.

What seems clear is that fuel costs continue to rise as summer approaches the 25% who made this year. And the best way to save on gas is not buying it. But even in the stores are rubbing their hands at seeing increased sales of bicycles and motorcycles of its exhibitors, also believe that this transport does not fit all.
