Spain supports international research on the repression in Syria

Spain supports an independent international investigation on the suppression of peaceful demonstrations in Syria, which has already killed at least 393 deaths, according to Amnesty International (AI). Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Juan Antonio Yanez, has expressed this morning in Congress support for the draft declaration submitted by the four European members of the Security Council (France, UK, Germany and Portugal), including a condemnation of violence by Damascus and the opening of an investigation that could take out the Human Rights Committee of the UN, which is part of Spain.

For number two in the Spanish diplomacy, the situation of Libya and Syria "are not equivalent, but do have" similarities "so that" the international community can not remain indifferent. " Nevertheless, so far ruled out sanctions and advocated to maintain open channels of dialogue between the EU and the regime of Bashar al-Asad, a position that has traditionally defended Spain and now is "more difficult and more essential ".

The aim of this dialogue has clarified, is "to promote a political solution" to the conflict, since the measures taken by the Syrian authorities, including lifting of emergency rule have been "late and insufficient." Although the U.S. has withdrawn all non-essential staff from its embassy in Damascus and Germany has recommended the departure of their nationals, the Foreign Ministry believes that "now is not the need" to evacuate the Spanish colony although it is possible to do so in the future.

What has made and the department heads Trinidad Jimenez is inadvisable to travel to that country. In Syria, a thousand Spanish lives, many of them married to Syrian citizens and dual nationals, hampering a eventual repatriation. Spain Embassy in Damascus remains "constant contact" with them to assess the situation, reports Servimedia.
