Nigeria begins counting votes in state elections

The counting of the state elections held today in Nigeria started in several districts of the African country after the closure of polling stations, said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Although the agency has ensured that the results will be announced in the next 48 hours, the recount of presidential elections (held on April 16) and legislative (the 9th) beat estimates in the body.

The state elections took place in a "peaceful and professional," said INEC spokesman, Solomon Soyebi, due in part to increased security forces deployed by the Nigerian Executive. The voting, which featured a low turnout, close the electoral process has been held throughout the month in the country's most populous continent, after legislative and presidential elections.
