Security Council backs EU proposal on Syria

The opposition of China and Russia today prevented the Security Council agreed to a UN statement condemning the Syrian regime's repression against peaceful demonstrators, diplomats said. Confirmed that "there was no agreement on a presidential statement" from the Council after the maximum security agency has held several meetings this week in search of an agreement on a common text against repression in Syria.

When that agreement is not reached before the opposition of Russia and China shared vision given by the four EU countries (Germany, France, UK and Portugal) that sit on the Council, the body decided to hold an open meeting to Western delegations individually request the cessation of violence.

Russia said the Security Council of the UN that the repression of the opposition in Syria does not threaten world peace and warned that foreign interference could lead to civil war. The Syrian government crackdown on demonstrators "not a threat to international peace and security," said Russia's UN representative, Ambassador Alexander Pankin.

"A real threat to regional security could come from foreign interference" , Pankin said. "These approaches lead to an endless cycle of violence" and could provoke a civil war, estimated at the meeting of the 15-member Security Council that failed to agree on a joint statement on Syria.
