.- Israeli airstrikes and bombings killed nine Palestinians in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, medical officials said, the deadliest days in months of conflict in the coastal enclave. Palestinian medical officials said three teenagers from 12, 16 and 17, who played football, and an adult family member killed by Israeli bombing, while five militants died in two air strikes then in another area of the Gaza Strip.
The death toll was the highest one-day in months, prompting calls for revenge from the militants, a conviction of a UN official and a request by Palestinian Prime Minister of foreign intervention to stop the violence. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologized for civilian casualties and said the Jewish state did not intend to escalate the conflict, but will defend its citizens against rocket attacks.
On Tuesday, Israel killed five militants of the Islamic Jihad group in two air strikes, one of which took place east of Gaza City, Hamas officials said, and doctors. Israel said a militant group was preparing to fire a rocket and that the same men had shot another hit a house in the Israeli city of Beersheba last month.
Earlier, Israel's armed forces said the target of shelling were militants. But Palestinian officials reported that the attacks struck a house and killed four people and wounding 12, including eight children. The homeowner was inside and youth playing soccer outside, witnesses and medics said.
Netanyahu issued a statement in which he lamented "the mistaken attack on innocent civilians." Abu Abdallah Al-Haraz, a leader of Islamic Jihad threatened in a statement that "blood will generate more blood and this blood must fight to Israel again and again." Hamas spokesman Ismail Rudwan said the movement's Web site that "this slaughter will not go easily and the Zionist entity must prepare for a tough response."
