Japan requested a limited number of foreign teams of search and rescue to help with the aftermath of the powerful earthquake and tsunami, United Nations said on Friday.

More than 68 search and rescue teams from 45 countries have offered aid to Japan, beaten by a 8.9 magnitude earthquake and tsunami on Friday in the northeast, said the agency. "Japan has called for international teams of search and rescue, but only few, "said Elisabeth Byrs, spokeswoman for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA, for its acronym in English) in Geneva.

Teams were requested at least four countries: Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States, said Byrs. Japan's request was made before another earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 jolted northwestern Pakistan early Saturday. U.S. Air Force flew with refrigerant to the Fukushima nuclear plant to help deal with a potentially dangerous collapse of the cooling system, said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy, expressed their solidarity, as U.S. President Barack Obama. The European Union said Japan requested search and rescue teams and sniffer dogs. The Russian agency for emergency services offered ERMACOM 40 people and three sniffer dogs and Polish firefighters, while Singapore had a civil defense forces ready.

China and Switzerland also offered rescue teams, while Britain, France and others said they were ready to send whatever help was necessary. "The world is shocked and saddened by the images that came from Japan this morning," said Secretary UN chief Ban Ki-moon told reporters in New York.

"We will do everything we can in this difficult time," he added. The largest earthquake that hit Japan since records began the earthquakes struck the northeast coast and triggered a tsunami with waves of 10 meters that would have caused the deaths of at least a thousand people. The Red Cross initially claimed that the tsunami had been higher than some Pacific islands that could affect, but then the agency said the evacuations in many coastal areas, and the Philippines, had been effective.

"The lessons learned from tsunami 2004 in the Indian Ocean are being put into practice, "said the International Federation of Red Cross Society Red Crescent said in a statement, the largest support network in the world. Its logistics center was ready to deliver 20 000 tents and other aid to the Japanese Red Cross.
