"Palestinians behind the massacre at the church," Mubarak: "We will not accept pressure"

CAIRO - There is a radical Palestinian group, the Army of Islam, after the attack on the Coptic Christian church in Alexandria that New Year's Eve caused 23 deaths. Who said it was the Egyptian Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, during a ceremony attended by President Hosni Mubarak. The Palestinian group has, however, immediately rejected the accusations: "The Army of Islam has seen no evidence of contact with the attack on the church in Egypt, as far as we approve those who have committed," said a spokesman.

"We will not hesitate to take measures to ensure the security of Egypt and its people and we will meet with supporters of the confessional, not to escape punishment," he assured Mubarak, in a speech broadcast on television. But the President also clarified that the matter relates only to Egypt: "I say to the voices that were raised abroad, calling for the protection of the Copts, that the era of the patrons are gone forever.

We will not accept pressure from anyone. The protection of the Egyptian Christians and Muslims it is our responsibility, "said Mubarak. Words in which it is not difficult to see even a reference to the positions taken by the Vatican. Even today, Pope Benedict XVI recalled the "evidence" to which Christians are subjected to the Middle East: "Their service - said the Angelus - is therefore even more valuable, confirmed by a witness that, in some cases, came the sacrifice of their lives.

" "We shook around them - he added - and this becomes an additional factor for all of communion."
