Sudan accused of war crimes in the Abyei region

Satellite images show that "war crimes" were committed in the disputed region of Abyei, a town on the border of North and South Sudan. The area is busy since Saturday by the forces of power northerner, says the NGO Sentinel Satellite Project. "These images provide documented evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Abyei," says John Bradshaw, director of Enough Project, which supports the project Satellite Sentinel.

The images, obtained and analyzed by the NGO, show "attacks by armored vehicles and destruction of villages." "There is an accumulation of tanks, helicopters" and a "deployment of forces along the main streets of Abyei, indicating that the invasion of Abyei was premeditated and well planned," the group added in a statement.

Tanks northerners took possession on Saturday, Abyei in violation of the peace accords that ended in 2005 the civil war between north, Muslim and Arab, and South, mostly Christian and black. 30 000 to 40 000 people fled the violence in the Abyei area, said the UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir said Tuesday that "Abyei [was] a land of Northern Sudan." "Our armed forces will not withdraw from this land," he stressed, while the international community calls for the withdrawal of its troops. The Satellite Project Sentinel is financed through the American actor George Clooney in order to monitor the emergence of violence after the referendum on the independence of Southern Sudan organized in January.

The latter was marked by a landslide victory of the secessionist option, which paved the way for the independence of this region in July. The people of Abyei must choose in a referendum in January with its attachment to the North or South. But the election was postponed indefinitely because of a dispute over voting rights for voters.
