Dies in clash with security forces in Iraq leader of Al Qaeda

A leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq was killed today during a standoff of several hours with Iraqi police and soldiers also died in an army officer near Kirkuk, 250 kilometers north of Baghdad, police said. The sources explained that the Army and the Police received information about where the leader was sheltering Al Qaeda, identified as Ali Abdullah Hazem, in the center of the city of Al Huwaiya, 50 miles southwest of Kirkuk.

When security forces arrived on the scene were met with explosives, which killed an army officer and wounding a policeman. Subsequently, a clash erupted between police and the terrorist leader, which ended with the death of the latter. The bomber was wearing an explosives belt, the police defused, the sources said, adding that two others were seized belts, bombs and weaponry.

Four women, two wives of Hazem, her mother and sister, were arrested during the operation. A leader of Al Qaeda who was detained in a prison in Baghdad today killed nine policemen in prison before dying himself shot by police, sources with the Ministry of Interior. The sources told Efe that the terrorist ringleader, identified as Abu Hazifa to Batawi, stole a gun from the police while being interrogated and carried out the attack on policemen, including officers.

Al Batawi is the main accused of the attack on October 31 against a Syrian-Catholic church in Baghdad, which killed 58 people. Among the officers who killed the terrorist arrested include the head of the anti-terrorist police in the Al Karrada Muaid General Saleh and his counsel. The incident began after midnight and there was an exchange of gunfire that lasted for several hours over this morning.

The policemen killed and wounded Al Batawi another charged church bombing in Baghdad. In addition, a civilian who were in jail to testify at a hearing died in the shootout, the sources added.
