.- The armies of Thailand and Cambodia today broke a ceasefire agreed yesterday to end the violence that erupted a week ago at the border, the military of both countries. Military spokesmen of the two Southeast Asian nations accused each other of having started this morning the gun and artillery fire around the ancient Khmer temple of Ta Krabey.
A Thai soldier died last night in an attack on Cambodia, bringing to 16 the number killed, including one civilian, while dozens have been injured and over 55 thousand have sought refuge in evacuation centers on both sides of the border. The Foreign Minister of Thailand, Kasit Piromya said yesterday in Jakarta that his country is committed to a peaceful end to the conflict and allow Indonesian observers at the border.
So far, Thailand has refused to international intervention, while Cambodia has requested assistance from the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), now president of Indonesia. But analysts said the Thai military takes advantage of the conflict to gain influence in the next general election, while the Cambodian Government is used to hide internal problems.
"The Thai military clearly see the dispute as a way to inject nationalist sentiment and also to strengthen its role as a defender of national security and political life," said Joshua Kurlantzick U.S., the Council on Foreign Relations. Most of the fighting, which began a week ago, there have been around the Khmer temple of Ta Meun (Ta Moan in Khmer), Ta Kwai (Ta Krabei) and Preah Vihear.
The border between the two countries, heavily mined, has never been clearly defined since France abandoned their colonies in Southeast Asia after World War II, and disputes have been frequent sovereigntists. The current conflict began in 2008, when UNESCO declared world heritage Preah Vihear, a Hindu monument of XI century, and included on Cambodian soil.
Currently, Thailand and Preah Vihear not claim, but several square miles surrounding.
