German police announced the arrest of three suspected members of Al Qaeda, accused of preparing a terrorist attack in Germany. According to the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, there are three Germans born in Morocco and living in Bochum, Essen and Dusseldorf. According to reports, the three men between 29 and 32 years took months building up the necessary components for making bombs.
The police watched them since they began their activities. The agents searched seven houses and facilities related to the plot, where explosive materials were seized. To ensure the smooth operation of their plans to attack in Germany, the suspects planned to test it during the day. Police stopped them at half past six, after stopping the test project.
The police had checked their mobile phones and computers. According to the ZDF television station, the detained leader of the trio participated in a terrorist training camp in Asia. No known reports indicated an impending attack. Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich (CSU) said, however, that the arrests prevented a "real danger" of attack, which shows that "Germany is in the crosshairs of international terrorism." The minister called for "vigilance." Three months ago, then-Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere (CDU) announced a tightening of security measures in Germany because of "concrete evidence" of terrorist plots.
The steps taken then, as the tourism closing the dome of the Berlin Reichstag (Parliament) have been relaxed in recent weeks. In 2006, a couple of terrorists tried to blow up a train in Cologne, but their detonators failed bombs. In 2007, authorities announced the dismantling of a terrorist cell planning a "new September 11" against U.S.
interests in Germany.
