India has shortlisted the Rafale, the French group Dassault Aviation, Eurofighter, proposed by the European EADS, BAE Systems and Finmeccanica, on his huge contract for one hundred twenty to six fighters, said on Thursday, a source within the Ministry of Defence. "Only the French Dassault and Eurofighter have been asked to expand their commercial offerings," the source said, confirming information given by the Hindustan Times newspaper, which suggested they were the only candidates.
Russian MiG (Mikoyan-Gurevich, Russian Aircraft Corporation), the American Boeing and Lockheed Martin and Saab of Sweden had also declared candidates to win the tender launched by India in 2007 and estimated at 12 billion dollars (over 7.5 billion euros). The Swedish manufacturer has announced on Wednesday that its Gripen fighter had been sidelined from competition.
"Today, the group of defense and security Saab AB has received information from the Ministry of Defence of India that the Gripen was not selected in the list of finalists for the Medium Multi-program RoleCombat Aircraft (MMRCA) "Saab wrote in a statement. The Indian defense ministry declined to comment immediately as the Russian and American groups were also excluded.
Dassault has also declined comment. This arms deal is one of the largest awarded by India, which seeks to modernize its aging military.
