Soon the new pirates of the Mediterranean

While fans (few) to the vicissitudes of the sea look all'ennessimo act of piracy off the Horn of Africa, where the Cargo Rosalia D'Amato of Perseverance Navigation was kidnapped the day before yesterday with 22 crewmen on board a few (much less who is the government) in the Mediterranean sense that they are laying the foundations for a new era of piracy.

Indeed, it already happened for weeks, the first true act of piracy today. Without anyone to call him so. The occupation, the hijacking and the kidnapping last 22 Asso, tug flying the Italian flag and owned by the shipping company Augusta Offshore Naples, released yesterday, was all the effects of a pirate.

As is known, armed men boarded the tug Italian, forced him to sail making it lose track, then they have brought back to the port of Tripoli where he seems to have remained until the time of issue. The Act, officially baseless, has all the characteristics of piracy, particularly after Gaddafi and his tribe were officially discharged from the international community and their actions, therefore, do not constitute more as dictated by a sovereign authority.

The Mediterranean was to place three thousand years of intense pirate and privateer. The Etruscans were pirates, the Greeks were pirates. All but the Romans were, as the Ottomans, the Venetians, the Spanish, the French, to Andrea Doria, and again, until the congress in Paris, only in 1853 that outlawed piracy (slavery was illegal since 1600) .

With the instability in the Middle East and Maghreb, chaos dictated by the massive migration, the heavy economic crisis of some European countries bordering the southern seas and the total lack of policy coordination and community of purpose among the European Union, NATO and the UN we will Indeed, we are already in good condition for the revival of the phenomenon and perhaps even pirate pirate.

I would not, especially, like the current invasion of boat people and four of the pirate-century, which the pirates (usually bold and brutal beggars) to become an anchor of the foreign policy of the superpowers, more than happy to juggle confusing theaters of war. The seizure of 22 Ace opens a new era.

It is no longer a problem of encroachment of some vessel of Mazara del Vallo. I do not be surprised if soon, perhaps this summer, maybe in the waters of southern Sardinia, we were to comment on the report of a kidnapping or armed robbery against a sailboat Italian or foreign by unknown assailants on board of fast cruiser.

Before that would be good to see the Navy Policy and analysts of these phenomena to develop preventive plans. Not isolated but possibly coordinated with other international marine. It should be remembered that for many decades, incidents of piracy in the Mediterranean are very isolated cases, mostly small attacks during a robbery or acts of petty crime.

The latest in the waters near us was three years ago, when a sailing ship (a Perini, an armed ketch cutter) was attacked by a boat in the bay of Porto Vecchio (Corsica) and "lighter" than three hundred thousand euro. Probably tipped off by one of the crew. The most sensational, dramatic and romantic dates back to 1988, the famous seizure of the catamaran with the killing of its Arx shipping Curina Anna and the mad flight of a pair of dissolute blinded by the myth of the South Seas.
