Netanyahu appoints new head of Shin Bet

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the appointment of Yoram Cohen, a senior responsibility within the security agencies, as the next chief of general security service of Israel, the Shin Bet. Cohen, former head of Shin Bet and the first practicing Jew who is elected as head of the agency, will replace current head of the Israeli internal security service Yuval Diskin, who ends his term next May 15.

Upon his appointment, still required the authorization of the Turkel, responsible for approving appointments to become effective. Born in Israel and with thirty years experience in the Shin Bet, Cohen completed his military service in the Golani Brigade, while participating in a special program to recruit observant Jews.

In announcing his appointment, Netanyahu praised his predecessor, Diskin, for its "significant and effective" contribution as head of the Shin Bet in the past six years. "I'm sure you thank him for his work, I speak on behalf of all citizens of Israel," said the head of the Israeli government.

It is expected that the next head of the Shin Bet to continue the trail left by Diskin as to, and increase the use of advanced technologies and greater operational flexibility. General security agencies, also known under the acronym of "Shabak", constitute, with the body of military intelligence and the Mossad, the secret services abroad, the three major branches of Israel's intelligence apparatus.
