Buzek urged to promote international arrest warrant against Gadhafi

.- The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, said today that the European Union must take the necessary steps to issue an international arrest warrant against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. "We must send a clear message that Gadhafi and his men must be brought to justice," Buzek said in a press conference after a speech before the summit of EU leaders to study the response to Libyan civil conflict.

"To put it bluntly: the dictator must go," said Buzek, and added that "the EU should take steps to try Gadhafi and their leaders face international justice for crimes against humanity." EP President noted that the "first priority with respect to Libya should be" the protection of civilians, "followed by" humanitarian assistance "and" support for a democratic transition.

"Buzek has called the situation in Libya "human tragedy" and noted that should use "all means possible to protect civilians" while getting "the support of the international community, especially Arab countries." On the possibility of imposing an area fly, the EP president said that "the best way is a Security Council mandate of the UN." Buzek has also proposed to grant asylum to Libyan military pilots to defect.
