"This is a continuation of the sharp increase in house demolitions in East Jerusalem, which is the trend since mid-2010 and more significantly the last two months of 2010," states, with supporting figures, Ir Amim, which advocates Israeli-Palestinian coexistence in Jerusalem. The NGO has identified 74 Israeli demolitions ordered by the Israeli municipality, three quarters (55) in the second half and nearly half (32) in November and December.
Of these 74 demolitions, 28 of them have concerned inhabited buildings, Ir Amim said in a statement. "The question of the construction without permits in East Jerusalem is a direct result of decades of Israeli policy that systematically omits the necessary urban planning in this part of the city that would allow Palestinians to build in accordance with the law," the statement said .
Israel regards East Jerusalem as part of its capital "eternal and indivisible," while the Palestinians want as the capital of their future state. December 22, the coordinator of UN humanitarian operations in the occupied Palestinian territories, Maxwell Gaylard, was alarmed at the increase in the number of demolitions in East Jerusalem and in areas under full Israeli control of West Bank, 275 in 2009 to 396 in 2010.
