The United States is prepared to significantly reduce the military engagement in Afghanistan: At least ten thousand men before the end of the year. The official announcement will come probably in the televised speech to the nation that President Barack Obama will tomorrow night in prime-time.
The retreat will be divided into several stages. A first group of soldiers begin to leave the country in July, as Obama promised to announce his new defense strategy in December 2009. The remaining will return home at year end, over a period of easing of the fighting in Afghanistan intensified during the spring and summer.
Currently the U.S. has 99,000 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan, in addition to 47,000 men from NATO.
