Fatah and Hamas signed a joint declaration in Moscow

Russia announced Monday, May 29, a further step of reconciliation talks between rival Palestinian movements, Fatah and Hamas, who signed in Moscow a new joint statement without revealing the content provided. "We were able to develop together an important statement that will help implement the agreements [reconciliation] of Cairo," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow that received the Palestinian delegates.

"In this text we express our loyalty to the Cairo agreement", for his part said Azzam Al-Ahmad, a senior Fatah official. "The Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, called me Sunday to thank us for having made available a place for this meeting so useful," which was attended, among others, Azzam Al-Ahmad and number two in the political bureau Hamas, Moussa Abu Marzouk, said Lavrov.

According to Mustafa Barghouti, member of Palestinian Legislative Council, Moscow has become "a co-sponsor" for Palestinian reconciliation. "We had a very good, very good meeting," he added. Russia has dismissed such criticism of Israel against Hamas, regarded by Israel as a terrorist organization, "said Barghouti.

Lavrov "believes that the best response to these criticisms is to move quickly forward to implement the Cairo agreement," also said the Palestinian negotiator. The Palestinian delegation conducts a three-day visit to Moscow a few weeks after the reconciliation agreement reached between Abbas' Fatah and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip.

This agreement, condemned by Israel, was welcomed by Russia, a member of the Quartet of Middle East, alongside the U.S., EU and UN. Moscow maintains contacts with Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by Washington and the European Union.
