Demonstrations in Sanaa leave 23 injured

Up to 23 protesters were wounded today by gunfire during clashes broke out between opponents of the regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh in Sanaa, witnesses said. The sources said the clashes occurred when a group of young people wanted to march from the plaza at the University of Sana'a, the epicenter of the riots, to the seat of Government and a group of allied soldiers tried to stop the revolution.

The march, called "Advancing to the seat of Government" was organized by a section of the Saleh regime opponents trying to radicalize the protests to achieve the overthrow of the president. In a telephone conversation, one witness, who requested anonymity, said troops of General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar defector tried to prevent the demonstrators came out in a march that was not agreed by the parties of the opposition.

So far it is unknown whether the shots have caused deaths among the protesters. Mohsen, considered the "number two" of the Yemeni army, is brother of Saleh and joined on 21 March at the ranks of the opposition from the January 27 calls for democratic reforms in the country and the president's resignation.
