CARACAS, 9 May. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Monday will begin a whirlwind tour of the region that will take you to Brazil, Ecuador and Cuba, with the aim of strengthening the agreements signed within the framework of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our Americas (ALBA) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR).
The tour kicks off in Brazil where he is scheduled to meet Tuesday with his counterpart from that country, Dilma Rousseff, in what will be his first official visit to its southern neighbor since the successor to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office in January . Both governments will promote agreements in the agricultural, industrial, housing, scientific, financial and telecommunications sectors, the agency Prensa Latina.
In Ecuador, Chavez will meet with President Rafael Correa will evaluate the progress of ALBA and its contributions to the development and strengthening of the ties in the region. The alliance is also formed by Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Nicaragua and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Chavez's visit to Quito will occur just days after Correa emerged victorious from the referendum held last weekend to reorganize the judiciary and reform some articles of the Constitution. The tour will culminate on Thursday May 12 in Havana. Said on Sunday Chavez himself, the agenda is scheduled to meet with his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, and the exmandatario Fidel Castro.
"We will work with Raul Castro, Fidel, the Cuban people," he said without specifying details.
