Storm kills 11 people and generates alerts in the Philippines

With Tropical Storm Aere leaving a trail of death in the country, Philippine officials on Monday asked the inhabitants of small agricultural villages in the north of the country to remain alert to the possibility of occurrence of landslides and floods. Aere has left 11 dead since joining the eastern province of Catanduanes on Sunday morning with winds of 85 kilometers (53 miles) per hour and gusts of 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour.

The storm triggered landslides and left some areas without power, while that hit Manila Bay and caused jitters in the capital overnight. On Monday he went to the provinces of Luzon Island, north of the country, gradually losing power. Officials urged residents in the region to stay away from mountainous areas prone to landslides, and warned communities in lowland areas to the possibility of flooding from overflowing.

They also called for fishermen and ferry crew to remain in port. "We are advising residents in areas of high risk to proactively evacuate before the storm hits," Chito said Castro, a spokesman for the government agency for response disaster. Among the 11 dead included three people who died on Sunday in a house that was trapped under a landslide in the village of Balata, in the province of Camarines Sur.

Six people drowned in the provinces of Albay, Catanduanes, Leyte, Northern Samar and Camarines Sur.
