Bernard Squarcini: "France is the target No. 2 al-Qaida"

Squarcini Bernard is the CEO of the Central Internal Intelligence (DCRI). But the main threat to France is Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb [AQIM]. There is a geographical proximity, colonial history passed, and there are comings and goings and family ties between people in France and other countries in the Maghreb and Sahel.

There is also a qualitative progression of AQIM, and France is the leading country in jeopardy. It was confirmed with the attempted attack against our embassy in Nouakchott [Mauritania]: 1.7 tons of explosives. Obviously they have a little hate. Since its allegiance to Al Qaeda, AQIM has increased tenfold its activities.

We went in two years from 150 to 400 men, with a circle of 150 to supply 200 men. There were twenty French there. They are among the risks that fear of France and Europe. And there are more and more. We try to avoid that they call foot on national soil. No, there is no built with French AQIM, to our knowledge.

AQMI is local recruitment. Yes, the third threat, after the return of jihadists from Pakistan and AQIM is the self-radicalization of people living in France. Some people love bin Laden, others are sometimes at the limit of the shirt. Not particularly, no. But we must take the lead. For a while, news bin Laden, Zawahiri and AQIM we target more.

It is taken into account. Americans are the No. 1 target and France target No. 2 al-Qaida. And with the death of bin Laden, there is a risk of escalation. We are Vigipirate red, which is quite comfortable and stabilizer, but it should strengthen measures abroad: the embassies, the French sites, stops of Air France in Africa, etc..

For admirers of bin Laden, his death could trigger either depression or galvanizing and desire for revenge. We find some liberalization of the arms market in Libya. AQIM may be interested in two respects: first salvage equipment ready, second Libyan combat. They are particularly looking for weapons such as missiles sol-air SAM-7.

It is a fear, but we have no confirmation. We have not identified anyone. We know that there are Libyans in Al Qaeda, but we have not reported any return to Libya. Interview by Yves Bordenave and Remy Ourdan Article published in the edition of 07.05.11
