Sarkozy's outbursts

In the West, and notably in developed Europe, and now reigns almost genetic conviction that in the former colonized world all instances of power play in lower leagues. The last case in which a First World country, France, the cradle of human rights, claiming preferential treatment to a less physically-the Mexico advance, and fully democratic, mixed with the hyperactive president, Nicolas Sarkozy , whose eagerness to be everywhere, marinated in this case probably electoral concern has been the cause of a diplomatic fiasco.

The case seemed, in principle, relatively minor. A French citizen, who is now 36, was arrested in 2005 in the act, with her partner and others who said they were abducted by the couple. Florence Cassez, after a series of appeals and amparo, and that a long list of witnesses and victims in court confirmed his complicity in the crime, is serving 60 years in prison in Mexico.

So far, the world as it is. But the French president saw things differently. Since 2009, Paris is lobbying, claims, protests and, in general, petulantly asking the review process or the transfer of the accused to France to serve the remainder of the sentence. Not the first time something like this happens, but rarely so openly and, diplomacy is often act more cautiously.

And the final blow on the table, Sarkozy has been to devote the cultural celebrations of 2011, Mexico's Year in France, with over 360 activities, Cassez Florence. You thought the French president that the Mexican Government before that decision was to remain indifferent? The exhibition The Mayan jade mask which was opened on 1 March, had to be canceled just days before a telephone warning the Mexican ambassador in France.

And that means not only that Mexico no longer lend works to be exhibited, but, as is done with other events, withdrew its financial participation. Typically, the country that offers this magnificent showcase world-the Gallery of Paris for the aforementioned exposure-pay the cost of transfer and promotion, for which Mexico had already allocated 22 million euros, in what would be a display of culture and history to the world.

But is willing to lose to defend the reputation of justice. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has warned that will not "submit" to the French demands, while pleading "respect" the institutions of his country. Sarkozy, who has announced he will seek the extradition or transfer of the convicted to France because it is "a humanitarian case" has not hesitated, however, receive 10 times Cassez parents with a tactless yet worse.

Mexico maintains, for its part, it is not possible to transfer according to the Strasbourg Convention, as France entered a reservation to it, that the extradition might be given a penalty in accordance with the laws of the country, even allowing the pardon, in this case with severe ridicule of Mexican justice.

But aside from the presidential bulimia, the best intentions of Sarkozy, and image concerns, underlying a pending between Europe and Latin America, which is not outside Spain. Already in the chroniclers beat a conviction that everything in the continent was impoverished version, flora, fauna and human resources of their counterparts in Europe or in the continents and visited by Europeans.

That feeling was about the state of nature and paganism in which its inhabitants lived, which was also a justification for conquest and evangelization of the land. But less understandable is still in the eighteenth century French naturalist Buffon and try to give scientific basis to this theory of innate inferiority of everything that is Native American.

And the tumultuous history of the nineteenth century that followed independence, whose bicentennial we are celebrating now, will have served to drive home a nail that is no less inappropriate subconscious. Latin America-even to this day Bolivia's Evo Morales-a Western country, where there are things that are done well and others are wrong.

Like here. But the Eurocentrism is the approach least likely to go to the great nation of the Spanish language is contemporary Mexico.
