BUENOS AIRES, 25 Mar. A crowd gathered on Thursday (Friday in Spain) in the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires to commemorate the date of the last coup, which took place on March 24, 1976. Thousands of people marched through the Avenida de Mayo to lead to the landmark square, carrying banners with pictures of the murdered and disappeared during Argentina's military dictatorship (1976-1983).
The march, as every year, was organized by the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and Relatives of Disappeared Detainees, but had the presence of a broad representation of the political, social and cultural development. These organizations have underlined the progress made in recent years in terms of Human Rights through oral and public trials that were held throughout the country against those responsible for the dictatorship, which have led to 169 convictions among 865 defendants.
"This represents the end of impunity for those responsible for crimes against humanity."
