UN calls for immediate end to violence in Libya

The Security Council UN expressed "grave concern" on Tuesday about developments in Libya, issued a statement calling for "an immediate end to violence." The Council also called on the Libyan authorities to ensure the safety of foreigners and ensure that humanitarian workers have access to the wounded.

Those responsible for attacks against citizens in Libya should be "held accountable," the statement issued at the end of a day discussions. Libyan diplomats, who broke with the leader Moammar Gadhafi, had requested the meeting, and had demanded a no-fly zone over the country imposed by the UN and humanitarian action.
