Haitian presidential election: the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council approves the first round results

Haitian Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) said Tuesday evening that he would not change the results of the first round of elections on December 7 last published. The PRC made the announcement after receiving a report by an expert mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) to assess the disputed electoral process.

The first round results had placed the former first lady of Haiti Mirlande Manigat in first place with 31% of the vote. Jude Celestin, supported by power, had won 22% of the vote. The popular singer Michel Martelly, who obtained 21% of the votes and is therefore not qualified for the second round, had challenged those results whose publication had caused three days of rioting in Haiti in early December.

"The possibility of a change of position in the ranking of second and third candidates in the list published in the primary results of the December 7, 2010 will be considered in the treatment challenges," reads a press release Electoral Council. A first copy of the report published in the press had suggested to dismiss the government candidate in favor of Jude Celestine Michel Martelly.

The electoral institution has also indicated that "technical considerations contained in the report of the OAS experts will be considered for achieving the second round of voting." The second round of presidential and legislative elections, originally scheduled for January 16 was postponed.

No new date has been set yet by the Electoral Council.
