Eastern Turkey is shaken by an earthquake of 5.3 degrees

An earthquake of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale has jolted the eastern Turkish province of Ardahan, without, according to initial reports, there had been victims. Turkish media reported that the epicenter of the quake was located on the border with Georgia and that the tremor could be felt in several surrounding provinces.

Although, in principle, there have been no victims, many residents have fled their homes and refuse to return to them in fear. In March 2010, an earthquake measuring 6 degrees on the Richter scale killed 51 people in the region of Elazig, where the quake caused the collapse of many houses of adobe.

Eastern Anatolia is shaken for about 2 000 earthquakes a year. The worst recorded earthquake in the country occurred in 1939 when 33 000 people died in the eastern province of Erzican due to an earthquake of 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale.
