Haiti: the second round of presidential elections postponed

The second round of presidential elections in Haiti can take place until February at the earliest, experts of the Organization of American States on the contested results of the first round had failed to submit their findings, announced Tuesday an official provisional electoral council (CEP). "It is physically impossible to hold the second round on 16 January," said Pierre-Louis Opont, CEO of CEP.

"We will have one month after the publication of final results of the first round," he added. The first round took place on November 28 under conditions criticized marred by accusations of fraud and against the backdrop of a cholera outbreak. The publication of preliminary results, December 7, sparked violent protests.

Supporters of Michel Martelly, rejected the second round for less than 7000 votes, shouted to manipulation. While the poorest state of America is preparing to mark the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed more than 250,000 died January 12, 2010, political uncertainty, fears delays in the payment of billions of dollars of international aid needed to rebuild.

"Today we are at a dangerous crossroads," said this weekend the outgoing President René Préval at the independence celebrations. Preval, who could not stand, dismissed the accusations of the opposition coalition says its Init (Unit) had rigged the results to ensure the presence in the second round of its candidate, Jude Celestin, who came second behind former First Lady Mirlande Manigat.
