Saudi women get behind the wheel

Many Saudi women drove a car Friday, June 17 in response to a call by activists to challenge the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. Several postings on social networking testified.

Women Drive campaign, launched two months on social networks, should continue "until the publication of a royal decree allowing women to drive," according to the Facebook page of the organizers.

The icon of the campaign is Manal Al-Sharif, a young computer scientist released May 30, after being detained for two weeks to have defied a ban on driving and posted on YouTube a video showing herself  driving a car.
