Sudanese troops take control of the disputed region of Abyei

Sudanese army troops were deployed yesterday in the restive region of Abyei, which straddles the north and south, and occupied the main town in the disputed territory, Sudanese state television said. Abyei is an oil-rich area due to tribal complexities, has been left out of the implementation of peace agreements signed between North and South Sudan in July that will lead to the independence of the South.

A military source quoted by Sudanese state television said the Northern Army entered last night in the city of Abyei, capital of the region of the same name, and Army tanks destroyed two of the Autonomous Region in Southern Brazil. The Southern troops retreated south of the border, added the source.

The military action that takes place after several armed clashes between troops in that region of North and South, maximizes the tension in the Abyei area, the more delicate conflict facing Sudan in view of the southern division.
