Kuwait elected to the Council on Human Rights UN

Kuwait is among the 15 countries elected Friday, May 20th at Board of Rights after the UN decision of Syria, whose government is facing an unprecedented wave of protest, to postpone his 2013 candidacy. The 192 countries represented at the UN General Assembly was called to renew every year as one third of the 47 Council seats, the main UN body responsible for periodically reviewing the situation of human rights in the member countries.

Western countries, angered by the repression of antigovernment protests in Syria for more than two months, had lobbied the Asian bloc that he has another candidate alongside India, Indonesia and the Philippines. Kuwait had finally been appointed. Despite this, five countries voted Friday to Syria, said President of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, announcing the results.

The vote is by secret ballot, it is unclear which ones. For Africa and Western Europe, the appointment of new members has presented no difficulty. For Eastern Europe, the Czech Republic and Romania have been selected but the application of Georgia has been postponed. For Latin America, Chile and Costa Rica were elected, unlike in Nicaragua.
