.- President Barack Obama will present on Thursday a financial aid plan several billion dollars to encourage democratization in the Arab world, based on the model of Eastern Europe after the Cold War, U.S. officials said Wednesday. The plan, initially intended to Egypt and Tunisia, wants to encourage other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, scenes of popular revolts since early this year, to undertake democratic reforms, according to these officials who required anonymity.
Obama presented the new initiative after 11h40 (15h40 GMT) in a speech designed to cover a common strategy with the wave of demonstrations for democracy that has rocked or knocked down more than a dozen of autocratic regimes in the region in recent five months. According to one official, the idea is inspired by "some of the measures applied successfully in Eastern Europe" during the fall of the Iron Curtain, "and apply in countries in transition to democracy in the Middle East and North Africa "." This is the start of an effort of great magnitude, "said the official.
According to him, Egypt and Tunisia, where massive demonstrations brought down the autocrats in power for more than 20 years, will be the first beneficiaries of this initiative. "Hopefully in the coming years come new democratic transitions," he said. Obama's plan will urge the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which has supported the former people's democracies over the past 20 years, to extend its range.
Its stock 60 countries met Friday and Saturday to discuss a proposed extension of its activities in North Africa.
