Kirchner Landslide in La Rioja

La Rioja, one of the least populated provinces of Argentina, with 350,000 inhabitants, which has served as a refuge to the Peronist president Carlos Menem since he left the Casa Rosada in heavy corruption charges, re-elected Sunday by an overwhelming majority to its current Governor Luis Beder Herrera, 60, candidate of the Frente para la Victoria, strongly supported by the Kirchner.

The opposition candidate, Julio Martínez radical, lost no less than 50 points apart. Kirchner's strong victory in La Rioja used to confirm the proper time in the election which is the president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. Carlos Menem himself said that could easily win re-election next October without a runoff.

"It is what is best suited to continue to pursue the presidency," he said. "He's doing things more or less well and there is no opposition. The opposition is very scattered," added the president. Menem, who hails from La Rioja, said that he would vote for the president, but will submit his own candidacy for the Senate (a position he has held since 1985 and guarantees the immunity) outside the PJ and facing the eventual nominee Kirchner's party.

Reelected governor, meanwhile, did not hide his sympathy for Carlos Menem. "The president does not need to ally with the Front for Victory to renew his seat in the Senate. People have an enormous affection, "he said. Menem, head of General Jorge Videla forgiveness and all the members of the military junta led dictatorship as well as a controversial economic policy, market-oriented and included an extensive privatization plans, is on trial for illegal arms sales to Croatia and Ecuador and charged with obstructing the investigation into the assassination attempt in 1994, the AMIA Jewish association.

Even today, the courts have rejected an appeal by his defense in another case corruption, the payment of bonuses during his administration. Interior Minister Florencio Randazzo, who accompanied Beder on election night, acknowledged that the governor came to an alliance with Menem's party, loyalty and dignity, but he tried, even thus separated as possible president.

"We either support we said, but will not be running for senator of the Front for Victory. Is the opposite of our thinking, "he said. There seemed, however, have many questions about the reelection of Menem and showed the least confidence in the possibilities of kirchnerismo to snatch the seat." Menem is much loved and respected in the Rioja "agreed.

Repeat elections in Chubut At the same time as the gubernatorial elections held in La Rioja, the vote was repeated in Chubut province, south of the country, one of the largest provinces in extent, but with little more than half a million inhabitants and with major oil wells (20% of national production), whose operation has just been renewed for no less than 40 years at a company that is owned 80% of CNOOC China investment and 20% of Argentine businessmen Carlos and Alejandro Bulgueroni.

Gubernatorial elections were held in March, but were detected irregularities forced to repeat the voting in several polling stations. Finally, the polls again give the winner, by just 384 votes, Martin Buzzi, mayor of Comodoro Rivadavia, designated as heir by the current governor of the province, the dissident Peronist Maria das Neves.

Buzzi's victory does not seem to worry much because the Kirchner, meanwhile, Peronism has torn breakaway in fighting and has lost much of its eventual national electoral weight.
