The new president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, was sworn in on Sunday in Abuja and sworn before promising to transform and unite this vast nation, the most populous in Africa. In the evening, however, ten people were killed and twenty others injured in the explosion of three artisanal gear in a market located on a military base in Bauchi in northern Iraq, an official of the emergency services.

An explosion also occurred at a rate of beer from around the capital, causing minor injuries, said another official. "The transformation begins today," said Jonathan in his inauguration speech in front of two dozen African heads of state and thousands of people in Eagle Square, Abuja where the place is held every official gathering .

"Together we will unite our nation and improve the living standards of all our people, from north to south, from east to west," promised the new president. "We will not let anyone use religious or linguistic differences to set us against each other," he said to applause, while his election on April 16, challenged in the north, was followed by three days of rioting that left eight hundred dead.
