U.S. calls on Bashar al-Assad to follow example of Mubarak

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates today urged Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to follow in the footsteps of Egypt Hosni Mubarak and leave power peacefully. "It's hard to know what is happening in Syria. If I had to advise them would follow the example of the Egyptian government and not that of Libya, "Barak said at a press conference in Tel Aviv with Secretary of Defense.

Referring both to the violent events taking place in neighboring Arab country, Gates said that Assad "is facing the same challenge to many governments in the region, the unmet needs of their people." "I just came from Egypt," he added Secretary of Defense, and there the army stood aside and allowed people to demonstrate and carry out a democratic revolution.

The Syrians should learn the lesson. " In recent days, at least a score of Syrians were killed in southern Iraq in the repression of opposition demonstrations against the regime of Assad. Gates, who arrived in Israel, will meet tomorrow with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, also made after leaders of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).

"I have a message to my meetings with Israeli leaders and Palestinians: it is necessary, and we have the opportunity to make a bold move, we move towards two-state solution, "he told the press conference. His visit coincides with moments of high tension between Israel and militants in the Gaza Strip after five days of mutual attacks that have killed more than ten Palestinians, including seven civilians, and dozens of rockets have fallen on Israeli territory.

Gates expressed support for "the right of Israel to defend itself against aggressors and attacks that awaken our refusal." Without that now Israel has established a direct relationship with the events in Gaza, yesterday a British tourist died and 39 others injured in the first bombing in Jerusalem since 2004.
