Iran stifles protest against the arrest of opposition leaders

.- The Iranian security forces fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters today in Tehran against the government and the alleged arrest of the two main opposition leaders, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karrubi. The demonstrations, called by the opposition on Tuesday to demand the resignation of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, came a day after being reported missing and Karrubi Musavi, along with their wives.

Later, an opposition Web site said both leaders had been detained in military prison Heshmatieh, east of Tehran, as protesters took to the streets to protest against Ahmadinejad and denounce the arrests. Heavy clashes were reported at various points in the Iranian capital after security forces fired tear gas to try to disperse the demonstrators, who chanted words of support and Karrubi Mousavi and against Ahmadinejad.

According to reports, police were deployed in several districts of Tehran, especially in the Seyed Khandan district, which is located Heshmatieh prison. Opposition websites reported that after the number of protesters increased Seyed Kahndan and around Tehran University, riot forces also began using electric shocks against them.

Realize unconfirmed reports of gunfire in several districts of Tehran, but so far it is unknown whether the shock caused casualties, some press releases account for dozens of arrests. The Attorney General of Iran rejected this afternoon that Karrubi Mousavi and are detained in prison and that is only under house arrest, but relatives of the two leaders insist they were transferred to Heshmatieh.

The Iranian media are prohibited from covering the demonstrations, making it impossible to verify the reports of opposition websites. According to reports, the Iranian opposition said the protests would continue until the release of their leaders.
